novaSkill – AI-powered competence management for the workplace of tomorrow

What drove the decision to develop an AI-based use case?

For a long time, the term "competence" has been a buzzword in personnel development. There is already an awareness that this ist the future of HR development. However, years of professional experience in this field have shown that many companies lack an overview of their employees' skills. Consequently, they have no insight into the skills required or whether employees are being utilized according to their abilities. This inspired me to develop a system, leading to the creation of the software novaSkill.

With novaSkill, target skills can be defined, and current skills can be assessed. Based on this data, the system generates individual learning plans for users and can identify the ideal role within the company for employees based on their competencies. The integration of AI makes competence management both time- and cost-efficient, making the software suitable for businesses and organizations of all sizes.

 

What were your expectations or requirements for the AI application?

The AI within novaSkill serves various purposes. Firstly, it assists in creating role-specific competence profiles, meaning it helps determine the target competencies. Careful attention was required to ensure that the AI actually identifies competencies and not qualifications or skills, as these are often confused—even HR professionals frequently struggle with this distinction in practice. Our AI was specifically trained in advance to generate competence profiles accurately.

Additionally, the AI must analyze data to assign personalized learning paths and role recommendations. We also wanted to offer the users something valuable with our AI. This is where the AI Coach comes into play. The AI Coach helps users apply what they’ve learned to their specific situations and individual challenges. For this, the AI needs to be capable of connecting users’ problems with the learning content, effectively delivering the transfer of knowledge into practice. This also involves an AI training process that is continuously refined to address the right questions and provide the most relevant support.

 

What frameworks/methods did you rely on for development?

In general, we sought advice from several experts from various fields during the development process. It is important to consider multiple perspectives. However, we relied specifically on the AI expert team from Meepls, who collaborated with us to program and implement the AI applications.

 

The use of AI solutions must also be accompanied by a change in competences. How have you dealt with this challenge in respect of your employees?

As a start-up with an AI-based product, there was no change involved. Everyone who contributed to novaSkill was engaged with AI from the very beginning, either bringing the necessary expertise with them or acquiring it during the development of novaSkill. However, the development of the AI is closely intertwined with the evolution of the competencies that need to be addressed.

 

In what timeframe did they implement the AI solution in your company/your client‘s company?

A year ago, the theoretical AI knowledge at the time began transitioning into the implementation of what is now the novaSkill software. However, the implementation will never truly be complete, as new and additional AI modules are continuously planned for integration.

Our AI solution makes modern personnel development—now inseparable from competence development—accessible and feasible for every company. The AI already creates competence profiles based on the latest scientific standards, and we are excited to further enhance the AI Coach in the future.

 

One final piece of advice/tip to other entrepreneurs looking to apply AI:

An important piece of advice is that when using AI, a human oversight mechanism should always be integrated. For example, in AI-generated content creation for personnel development, it’s essential to ensure the accuracy of the content and that copyright laws are respected. At the same time, a future without AI is becoming increasingly unimaginable. So don’t wait too long to jump on board—after all, as the saying goes, "Those who don't move with the times will be left behind."
