Innovations in the grocery retail

What drove the decision to develop the use case?

The motivation behind the development of the digital business model at Beckesepp lies in the goal of both taking local customer wishes into account and maintaining local supply efficiently in a limited area. This approach began with a delivery service that was originally designed for older customers who were no longer able to shop for themselves. Although this service was not digital at first, it formed the basis for later digital initiatives. Before the coronavirus pandemic, Beckesepp began its first experiments on digital platforms provided by Edeka. This transformation led to significantly leaner and optimised processing, which was a major step forward for the company.

What technologies, skills and structures were necessary for the development and implementation of the digital solution?

The business model of the Beckesepp delivery service is based on a digital platform on which customers register and order products. These orders are recorded on computers and printed out for processing. Special logistics structures are required for implementation, with employees packing the ordered items into green baskets and delivering them directly to the customer, even to the fridge if necessary. The service offers various payment options, including SEPA direct debit and credit card payment at the door. Two full-time employees have been hired specifically for the delivery service to manage the complex process. In addition, a hotline provides support in using the digital ordering system and offers personal assistance on site if required. This model aims to establish the delivery service as an attractive service that is currently still in the growth phase. Beckesepp is therefore equipped for future expansion.

In what timeframe did you implement the digital solution in your company/your client‘s company?

In 2019, the new merchandise management system was introduced and the webshop was purchased.

What is the added value that the digital solution brings?

The Beckesepp delivery service's business model primarily offers improved customer service through personalised delivery options, supported by digitalisation and automation. At the same time, it ensures the future viability of the company by adapting to modern market developments and maintains a high degree of adaptability to customer requirements by developing and controlling processes in-house.

What funds were used to implement the solution?

The delivery service was developed in-house and without external partners, with both the development and financing coming from the company's own resources. In addition, subsidies were successfully acquired to support technological investments.

What challenges were overcome?

The successful overcoming of various challenges includes the creation of a digital online market to increase the customer base and achieve greater customer loyalty. This was complemented by the automation of the ordering processes, which reduced labour costs. Innovative technologies, such as radio chains, were used to increase efficiency. Particularly noteworthy is the customisation of the service to the needs of special customer groups, such as elderly and sick people, which has strengthened customer loyalty across different generations. Finally, continuous improvement and customisation of the platform and technology has ensured that rapidly changing market requirements are met.

What is the impact of the new digital solution on the customer segment, markets, partners, and company structure?

Beckesepp is expanding its range of customers through an efficient delivery service, focusing on close cooperation, integrating new employees in a targeted manner and using modern technologies such as automatic ordering systems. The company structure adapts flexibly by hiring two full-time employees specifically for the delivery service. The company's financial strategy is emphasised by the use of its own funds and the targeted application for subsidies. Overall, Beckesepp demonstrates a balanced adaptation to digital developments while maintaining traditional values and customer relationships.
