Expert article: Between day-to-day business and innovation
Day-to-day business comprises the routine tasks and duties that are performed on a daily basis to keep the business running. However, the use of the term can be problematic for various reasons:
- The focus on day-to-day business can lead to important strategic decisions being postponed.
- Those who are constantly lost in day-to-day business rarely find time for innovation
- If everything is seen as part of day-to-day business, it can be difficult to set priorities.
- Instead of optimizing processes, the status quo is maintained because it's “day-to-day business” and that's how it's always been done.
On the other hand, misorganization of work naturally also leads to real overload. This in turn creates a feeling of being overwhelmed and constantly rushed, which can then affect productivity and the quality of work. The biggest problem for many companies is not a lack of ideas, but a lack of time to implement them.
In a constantly changing world, companies must regularly take the time to rethink their “way of working”, set new priorities and adjust roles, responsibilities and workloads.
Ambidexterity” provides a solution: an ambidextrous company can simultaneously operate stable, efficient business models (exploitation) and explore innovative, new business areas (exploration). And this approach also needs the right organization to lead to success. Which “exploit” roles are needed? Which “explore” roles? Who should do this and where should the time come from?
Four ways to create time:
- The targeted elimination of tasks that do not make a significant contribution to business success can save valuable time.
- Often, a simple change of approach can already achieve major optimization effects.
- Outsourcing to external service providers.
- And (to finally get to the topic) tasks can be handed over to AI.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) offers enormous opportunities to automate routine tasks and make them more efficient. Today, AI helps marketing departments to create, display and optimize advertising, HR to advertise jobs, screen candidates or create references, collect and evaluate data, and AI even programs itself in the technology team.
So you can save time relatively quickly by simply listing and screening day-to-day business activities and handing them over to AI. And in the next step (we are currently working on this), the AI itself will observe what the team does throughout the day and make suggestions as to how it can relieve the team.
Day-to-day business may be unavoidable, but it must not become a burden. Through targeted strategies such as optimizing the organization and using AI, companies can free up valuable time and focus on what really matters: developing and securing the future of the company.
